The City Of The Tribes

The City Of The Tribes was so named after the thirteen tribes of the City. They were: Athy, Blake, Bodkin, Browne, D'Arcy, Ffont, Ffrench, Joyes, Kirwan, Lynch, Martin, Morris and Skerrett. They have been honoured by the city authorities by naming the city's roundabouts after them. These families were first referred to as tribes by Cromwell's people who used the term as a reproach because they did not like the way the Galway families stuck together and supported each other through their difficulties. Difficulties that were caused by Cromwell. Cromwell’s men thaught that the tribes had unusually strong friendships in such troubled times. The tribes then adopted this term for themselves.
